SecuriTea Party
A Collection of Tea Parties for Security Professionals

About

SecuriTea parties are an unaffiliated collection of meetups for like-minded security professionals. SecuriTea parties facilitate the discussion of topics of interest in a non-work setting; preferably while drinking tea instead of alcohol.

SecuriTea parties are like any other information security party or meetup, except:

  • The decibel level is conducive to conversation
  • There is a code of conduct
  • There is absolutely no alcohol
  • There is, however, plenty of tea

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I host my own SecuriTea party?

Absolutely! All you need is tea, a few people, and plenty of good conversation. If you'd like your event to be posted on our site, just fill out the host form.

Can I use my own Code of Conduct?

Yes, that's perfectly fine so long as you have one and enforce it. The goal is to ensure that there is transparency in what behaviours are acceptable at your event so attendees can choose whether or not to attend with full knowledge of the environment in which it will be held. Some locations and host events will require you to follow their Code of Conduct, and that's completely fine.

How is each event's Code of Conduct enforced?

Each event is responsible for enforcing their own Code of Conduct. This site is only for aggregating similar events. That said, if an event fails to enforce their Code of Conduct we can and will remove their events from the site. If this happens, please contact info@securitea.party to let us know.

Why no alcohol?

There are several reasons for this:

  • Not everyone feels comfortable around alcohol. Maybe they're a recovering alcoholic, maybe they had a bad experience before, or maybe they just prefer not to be around it.
  • Alcohol can impair judgement and lead to drama. Burnout is real, and burnout plus alcohol can lead to some embarassing and sometimes dangerous situations.
  • Every other information security event has alcohol, why not have one with tea?

Prominent figures in the infosec community have posted about this before:

Code of Conduct

Please note this is a sample Code of Conduct for events that do not have their own to utilize at their discretion. This policy is not enforced by the SecuriTea.party team. Each event is responsible for implementing proper reporting channels and enforcing their Code of Conduct.

SecuriTea parties are dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. Event participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the event at the discretion of the event organizers. Our default anti-harassment policy can be found below. Individual events may have their own Code of Conduct, but all SecuriTea events have a Code of Conduct.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, or religion.
  • Sexual images in public spaces
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
  • Harassing photography or recording
  • Sustained disruption of talks or other events
  • Inappropriate physical contact
  • Unwelcome sexual attention
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviour

Enforcement

  • Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately
  • If a participant engages in harassing behaviour, event organisers retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This includes warning the offender or expulsion from the event.
  • Event organisers may take action to redress anything designed to, or with the clear impact of, disrupting the event or making the environment hostile for any participants.
  • We expect participants to follow these rules at all event venues and event-related social activities. We think people should follow these rules outside event activities too!

Reporting

If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, please report it as soon as possible. Harassment and other code of conduct violations reduce the value of our event for everyone. We want you to be happy at our event. People like you make our event a better place.

You can make a report either personally or anonymously to the individual event's coordinator or staff.

This anti-harassment policy is based on the example policy from the Geek Feminism wiki, created by the Ada Initiative and other volunteers.
